Mahboubeh Hajiabdolbaghi was born and raised in Tehran, where her parents encouraged education, curiosity, and independence. She studied medicine at Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS), at a time when only around one in ten medical students was female. “The passion for learning my mother and father gave me has stayed with me throughout my life”, she tells The Lancet Infectious Diseases. She retired as Professor of Infectious Diseases at TUMS in 2022 and but continues in clinical practice in Tehran.
