Born and raised in Mar del Plata, Argentina, Daniela Hozbor and her four siblings learnt the importance of sharing and helping. Her father was a paediatrician and her mother an engineer – but they never told their children which paths to follow, just that education and knowledge would make those paths more fulfilling. Hozbor chose to study biochemistry at the National University of La Plata (FCE-UNLP), some 400 kilometres away. “I wanted to understand things at a molecular level, but I also wanted that understanding to be close to life,” Hozbor tells The Lancet Infectious Diseases.
