The 36th Congress of the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID) was recently held in Munich, Germany. ESCMID 2026 provided much needed optimism and future direction to the infectious disease community against a backdrop of science being challenged from political constraint and the rise of misinformation. Editors of the journal also returned inspired by new science, ideas, knowledge, and personal connections. At the same time, we were prompted to reflect more broadly on the importance of infectious disease conferences and what some of the challenges are for in-person participation, such as costs, inclusion, and sustainability.
