As of 29 May 2026, the Ebola disease outbreak caused by Bundibugyo virus continues to affect the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda.
On 28 May, the DRC Ministry of Health published updated figures reporting 125 confirmed cases, which included 17 deaths, and 906 suspected cases, which included 223 deaths. These were reported across Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu provinces.
The number of suspected cases and deaths has decreased compared with the previous report following a data revision by the DRC authorities, which removed non-cases and reclassified some cases as confirmed.
Uganda has reported nine confirmed cases, including one death; at least three of these cases were linked to travel from DRC.
Although information remains limited, we assess the likelihood of infection for people living in the EU/EEA as very low. ECDC continues to monitor the situation closely and will update its assessment as new information becomes available.
A weekly update on this outbreak is available in the weekly communicable disease threats report.
