Bundibugyo virus is now driving the largest Ebola outbreak that the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has ever faced. As of Sept 30, 2026, DRC has reported 8224 confirmed cases, including 3982 deaths, resulting in a crude case fatality ratio (CFR) of 48·4%. The outbreak is not yet under control so effective control measures are paramount. Prevention of Bundibugyo virus is currently hampered by the fact that there is no licensed vaccine for this virus but vaccine trials for Bundibugyo virus that have started recently could lead to the development of essential tools for prophylaxis.
