Aalisha Sahukhan was eight when she decided she would become a doctor. “Exactly the age to be making important life decisions”, this proud Fijian tells The Lancet Infectious Diseases, a decision shaped by her beloved grandmother’s illness and passing, and wanting to be useful while steering clear of spotlight. Her career, leading the Fiji Centre for Disease Control (Fiji CDC), would ultimately thrust her into the spotlight, first as chair of taskforces leading responses to national epidemics of meningitis (2018) and measles (2019), and ultimately as technical lead and a national spokesperson for Fiji’s response to COVID-19.
