Friends and family kept asking, “Why infectious diseases?” Although their intent was kind, the subtext was constant: why choose a path that is demanding, less lucrative, and often unseen? I had no slogan in response. I only knew that, since adolescence, I was drawn to infections caused by improbable microorganisms, with protean presentations and diagnostic challenges that leave no room for shortcuts. At first, microorganisms appear as unidentifiable, surreal shapes, until diagnostics and microbiology allow for their identification and characterisation.
