While being raised in the Republic of San Marino, neglected diseases were not something Dora Buonfrate ever thought about during her quiet and happy childhood. “But for as long as I can remember, I had wanted to be a medical doctor and care for people”, Buonfrate tells The Lancet Infectious Diseases. Today, she is head of the Clinical Research Unit in Infectious Tropical Diseases, IRCCS Sacro Cuore Don Calabria Hospital, Negrar, Italy and also head of the WHO Collaborating Centre on Strongyloidiasis and Other Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs).
